Alkhemy Print + Pattern
Alkhemy Print + Pattern is a small design studio which specializes in creating pattern designs for various surface applications. Our design emphasis is rooted heavily in the notion of using indigenous patterns and motifs to create an ethnic modern aesthetic. Also embedded in our design philosophy is the peppered use of musical, mathematical, scientific, magical, mystical and alchemical symbols.

We employ and sometimes re-interpret ancient motifs we have forgotten or are unfamiliar with. We use care, tradition and understanding of the language of pattern & culture when approaching symbols for use. In order to understand symbolism and motif, you must recognize a culture, people or society. When in doubt of use, we ask permission or decline to use specific symbols in print.

We are currently working on our first collection of fabrics and wallcoverings set to launch... soon.
Opon Ifa (Divination Board), Yoruba
The Opon Ifa
The Ifa divination system is practiced among West African (Yoruba) and African Diaspora communities. The Ifa refers to the mystical figure Ifa or Orunmila, regarded by the Yoruba people as the deity of wisdom and intellectual development. In the 12th century, the city of Ile-Ife, located in the Osun region of the southwest of Nigeria, emerged as the cultural and political centre of this community. Ifa divination does not rely on a person having oracular powers but rather on a system of signs that are interpreted by a diviner, an Ifa priest/priestess or babalawo. The Ifa divination system is applied whenever an important individual or collective decision has to be made.
